Yosemite Valley, California

A Weekend in Yosemite Valley

Two days under granite walls, with morning mist on the Merced and dinner cooked on a tailgate.

We arrived after dark — the kind of late where the rangers had gone home and the coyotes were the only ones checking who came in. The first sight of El Capitan came at 6 a.m., still grey-blue with a knife of sunrise on its edge.

Day one: the floor

Most people go up. We stayed down. The valley floor is its own continent if you stop racing through it: black oaks, the hush of the Merced, deer that treat you like furniture.

We forget that landscapes ask to be sat with, not summited.

We walked Cook’s Meadow at noon. The light there does something honest with green — no polariser needed.

Day two: Mist Trail to Vernal Falls

Up before the crowd, slick steps, full waterproofs. The roar of Vernal builds like a freight train. By the bridge below the falls, you stop hearing your own voice. We didn’t try to. The lookout above is the kind of place where you sit down, take the lid off your thermos, and don’t say much for an hour.

Practicalities

  • Camping: Upper Pines if you can book six months out; otherwise Hodgdon Meadow has more flexibility.
  • Food: Curry Village pizza is honest fuel. The coffee at Degnan’s is not pretending to be third wave.
  • Getting around: the shuttle bus is faster than driving once the lots fill, especially weekends.
